What Are Wisdom Teeth & Why Do They Need Removal?

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, typically emerge in teens and young adults between 15 and 25 years old. For most of us, due to evolution, there is not enough space in the jaw for them, which can lead to complications, even though some people’s wisdom teeth grow in without issues.

Wisdom teeth can become impacted (trapped below the gums or angled improperly), which can cause pain, infection, or damage to surrounding teeth. Removing them can prevent or resolve these issues and protect your long-term oral health.

Our team can assess and safely remove your wisdom teeth if necessary. Contact us to schedule your consultation today.

When Is Wisdom Teeth Removal Needed?

Wisdom teeth typically start developing between the ages of 15 and 25. Through regular dental exams and imaging, we’ll monitor the growth and emergence of your (or your child’s) wisdom teeth. That way, we’re prepared and can plan removal if and when necessary.

Some signs and symptoms that you may need wisdom teeth removal include:

  • Pain or discomfort in the back of your mouth
  • Swollen, tender, or bleeding gums around the molars
  • Difficulty opening your jaw fully or chewing

We typically plan to remove wisdom teeth before the roots are fully developed, as this can lead to a smoother recovery. Younger patients also tend to heal more quickly, making the procedure easier and recovery faster.

Some Benefits of Having Your Wisdom Teeth Removed

Even if you’re not experiencing pain now, having your wisdom teeth removed prior to root development can help you avoid discomfort down the road. Some of the benefits of removal include:

  • Preventing overcrowding: If your jaw is too small to accommodate wisdom teeth, removing them can prevent your other teeth from shifting out of alignment to make room.
  • Protecting against infections: If your wisdom teeth become impacted, they can create pockets that harbour bacteria and lead to gum infections.
  • Avoiding damage to other teeth: If your wisdom teeth emerge improperly positioned, they can press against adjacent molars, which can cause decay or weaken their structure.
  • Improving overall comfort: If you’re experiencing pain or headaches from your wisdom teeth, their removal can relieve these symptoms.

Monitoring Your Wisdom Teeth

While your wisdom teeth are growing, we’ll use X-rays and imaging during regular dental exams to determine whether your wisdom teeth need to be removed. Once your wisdom teeth are ready for removal, our team will guide you through preparation, which may include:

  • Avoiding certain medications or foods before the removal.
  • Arranging a ride home after the procedure.
  • Discussing sedation options if required (local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or IV sedation). We often recommend conscious sedation, which puts you in a relaxed state, but you’ll remain awake and able to communicate the entire time.
  • Scheduling time off work or school for the procedure and recovery.

The Removal Procedure

The wisdom tooth removal procedure varies depending on whether your wisdom teeth are erupted (have come through the gums) or impacted (are stuck below the gumline). In general, the removal procedure will follow one of these processes:

  • For the extraction of erupted teeth, the dentist will thoroughly numb the area and carefully remove the affected teeth. If you choose sedation, you’ll receive these medications prior to the procedure.
  • For impacted teeth, a small incision may be made to access the tooth, and it may be divided into sections for easier removal.
  • We may use stitches to suture gum tissue over the extraction site and help prevent infection.

Tips for Healing After Wisdom Teeth Removal

It is crucial that you follow the aftercare instructions provided by your dentist after wisdom tooth removal to promote smooth healing and prevent complications, such as dry socket. Most patients feel back to normal within 1–2 weeks, although full healing may take longer.

In general, you should plan to eat soft foods and avoid extreme temperatures. Avoid using a straw while you’re healing to prevent dry socket. We’ll advise you on how to recover safely and comfortably after your extraction procedure.

We understand that wisdom teeth removal can be stressful. That’s why our team prioritizes your comfort and well-being every step of the way. Whether you’re experiencing discomfort or just need a consultation, we’re here to help you make a decision about your wisdom teeth.
