What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal treatment helps to restore or save a tooth that has become inflamed or infected. A tooth with damage or deep decay can lead to infection of the pulp inside the tooth, which can result in the need for a root canal.

During a root canal treatment, your dentist will numb the area to prevent any discomfort during the procedure. They will then remove the affected pulp from inside the tooth.

Once the pulp has been removed, your dentist will fill and seal the tooth. In most cases, we also recommend a crown to protect the tooth after a root canal.

Reasons You Might Need a Root Canal

Root canals can treat an inflamed or infected tooth, relieving your discomfort and preventing further decay of your tooth. If you notice any of the following symptoms, make sure to book a dental exam as soon as you can. The sooner decay is detected and managed, the more we can preserve.

Some common signs of an infected tooth can include:

  • Persistent tooth pain, especially when chewing or touching the tooth
  • Tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Tooth discolouration
  • Inflamed or tender gums
  • A chipped or cracked tooth
  • A loosened tooth
  • Swelling or pain in the jaw or nearby teeth and gums

Your hygienist will also check for signs of infection during your routine dental cleanings. If they or your dentist notice any signs of infection or inflammation during a routine appointment, the dentist may recommend root canal treatment.

While a tooth extraction may be necessary in some cases, we’ll recommend taking action to save your natural tooth whenever possible.

Taking Care of Your Tooth After a Root Canal

After a root canal treatment, you might notice your tooth is tender for a week or 2. This is normal. However, if you experience bad pain or swelling, contact us immediately.

Plan to wait a few hours after your treatment before eating. Choose soft foods for the first few days, until your tooth is no longer tender. We typically recommend avoiding extreme temperatures or chewing hard or sticky foods such as nuts, seeds, or candies and gum. If you have any questions, please ask us during your appointment.

While a root canal removes the infection in your tooth, it doesn’t protect your tooth from other types of damage. It’s important to maintain good oral hygiene practices, such as brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing regularly. We’ll also recommend a regular appointment schedule with dental cleanings every 3–6 months to help keep your teeth clean and strong.
