How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment used to align your teeth and bite. Unlike traditional braces, which use metal brackets and wires, Invisalign uses clear, removable aligners to gently shift your teeth into a new alignment.
Invisalign aligners are custom-made based on your teeth. When you wear your aligners, gentle pressure helps move your teeth to their intended position.
Typically, we recommend wearing your aligners for at least 22 hours a day to achieve the results you want. That means wearing them except during meals or snack breaks. You can also remove the aligners to brush and floss your teeth and clean the trays themselves.
Orthodontics Without the Wires
We’ll start the Invisalign process with a consultation to cover the basics. This includes a conversation about the process, what results you can expect, and whether Invisalign is the right fit for your budget and goals, or if another orthodontic treatment would be more beneficial. We’ll also take photos and a digital scan of your teeth to create a simulation showing how your smile could look after treatment.
Once you’ve decided to go forward with Invisalign, we’ll start the process by reviewing your scan from your consultation to create a detailed 3D image that we’ll use to create your custom aligners. Once your aligners are ready, we’ll schedule a fitting appointment.
Throughout the Invisalign process, you’ll change aligners every week in most cases. We’ll schedule follow-up appointments every 6–10 weeks to check that your teeth are shifting properly and give you the next set of aligners to wear.
When switching aligners, you may notice your teeth become more sensitive due to the change in pressure. This is normal and should only last a few days.
How to Take Care of Your Aligners
While clear aligners offer more flexibility than braces, as you can remove them while eating, there are still some care tips to keep your aligners clean and your teeth healthy.
We’ll discuss care instructions thoroughly during your appointments. However, following these general guidelines will help keep your aligners clean and in good shape:
- Remove your aligners when you eat or drink anything besides water
- Keep your aligners in their protective case whenever they’re not in your mouth
- To clean, gently brush your aligners with a soft toothbrush
- Rinse food particles out of your mouth or give your teeth a quick brush after eating before putting your aligners back in
